Leading broadcaster trusts FMTS to stop sports piracy

A broadcaster and platform operator needs to enhance their content protection.

They have the rights to a selection of sports events, and need a robust solution to protect their investment. They turn to FMTS to help ensure they receive the best ROI from their purchased content.

Challenge

Having secured the rights to show a selection of sports events, this broadcaster and platform operator required a robust solution to protect their investment. They turned to FMTS for help.

  • Sports content facing piracy
  • Investment worth over $5 billion needing protection
  • Content on linear channels

The operator secured the rights to show sports matches, adding to the extensive sports, news and entertainment they already broadcast.

With several sports channels to protect from content fraud, they needed a linear and pirate IPTV monitoring service. The customer was also interested in what new enforcement methods were available to ensure success. They had heard FMTS supported sports leagues in the UK to successfully implement real-time Dynamic Delivery Server Blocking. This technology had never been trialled in their country and the customer was keen to understand how it could stop content fraud in its tracks and block access to pirate sites entirely.

Solution

  • Linear monitoring and enforcement
  • Closed / subscription IPTV monitoring
  • Dynamic Delivery Server Blocking for sports content

FMTS introduced a combined monitoring, enforcement and blocking programme for the customer.

The automated, cloud-based monitoring services provide comprehensive detection whilst the legal enforcement ensured the rapid and effective takedown of pirated content. Having identified a particular set of pirate IPTV services that were a major concern for content fraud, the FMTS team were able to investigate and issue takedown orders.

The customer also wanted to block IP addresses of pirate streams containing their sports content. Pioneered by FMTS in 2017, Dynamic Delivery Server Blocking is a network-level enforcement mechanism based on a legal order for local jurisdiction. It focuses on video delivery servers, rather than front-end pirate services. Access to illicit servers can be restricted in real-time, drastically reducing the number of illegal streams available, driving viewers to legitimate alternatives, and therefore helping to maintain the value of that content to the platforms that have licensed it.

The broadcaster asked for support to help introduce these blocking orders to their location for the first time.

We’re delighted our work with this customer had such a positive impact on their piracy problem. Our unrivalled solutions have helped them to curtail sports piracy and protect their investments.

Thanks to FMTS, this customer has significantly reduced the piracy of their content. The comprehensive monitoring and enforcement services, alongside supportive account management, data analysis and investigations into pirate IPTV have helped to keep their content safe.

Working alongside FMTS and legal counsel, many IP addresses have been blocked, leading to a positive impact on the reduction of piracy.

By starting with blocking particular IP addresses before moving onto Dynamic Delivery Server Blocking, they were able to set a precedent of blocking, working alongside their local courts and in collaboration with legal advisors.

This happy customer has since discussed additional services available to further increase their content protection.
